Installing a geolocation beacon
When you're planning a long-haul cruise, it's very common to equip yourself with a communication system to keep in touch with land. And your loved ones often want to be able to locate you in real time during your voyage. That's one of the benefits of a geolocation beacon.
Determining the position
Unlike a person, an object or a vehicle, a boat's playing field is much wider, so it's essential to be well equipped. The Units geolocation systems operate via the terrestrial telecommunications network (GSM) and/or via a satellite network (Globalstar, Iridium or Inmarsat). In all cases, the Tracking GPS satellite system is used to determine position.
Tag uses
Installing a geolocation beacon also enables you to benefit from a range of other uses, such as monitoring your boat, receiving an SMS in the event of damage on board (water ingress, fire, etc.) if the beacon is interfaced with a detector, or sending messages to your loved ones or emergency services.
The Units Hybrids
There are now "hybrid" Units devices, such as the Alive tracker supplied by Advanced Tracking, which use the Iridium satellite network and the GSM/4G/5G network, depending on your position. As a result, they have no range limit and an integrated distress button.
Subscription
If you opt for a geolocation beacon, be aware that you need to add a monthly subscription fee, which can be flexible with Advanced Tracking, to the purchase price of the beacon.
